A city slicker finds more than she bargained for when she visits her cousins on the farm in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

It’s 1967 and The Summer of Love. Suburban eighth-grader Vanessa knows how she’s going to spend it: sleeping in and enjoying all the season has to offer. Instead, as this new novel reveals, she will be spending two weeks visiting cousins she hardly knows on a farm in Fishers, Indiana. Once she’s settled in, however, Vanessa learns that country life offers unexpected adventures, starting with a legend about a Civil War-era ghost stalking the area, and a mysterious abandoned house that she and the other kids can’t resist. She even experiences her first, innocent summer romance.

“The Ghost of Cheeney Creek,” set in 1967 in central Indiana, follows the cousins and their friend Jim, who get to know one another after initiating their big-city cousin into the intricacies of country life and what they do for fun in the summer. Their curiosity about the ghost and why he’s haunting the area eventually put them on a perilous path. Daniel, Luke, Emma, Vanessa and Jim begin hanging out together, but run-ins with a creepy character who seems to be up to no good put everyone on edge and introduce them to danger. The nearby abandoned house hides a surprising secret, and someone will do anything to keep that secret to himself. Will the youths be able to reveal the secret to others, or have they become too entangled in their adventure?

Author Madalyn Kinsey, a partner in an Indianapolis law firm, has also lived in Chicago and San Francisco. Kinsey, who was raised in Indianapolis, drew upon her visits with extended family on the family farm near Fishers, Indiana, in developing this story. The Civil War-era graveyard near the house, the mysterious creek winding through the fields, and other curious aspects of that farm, are depicted. Sharon F. Cazzell created the realistic pencil illustrations that add drama to the novel.
